Deauville,

birthplace of the Group

Eugène Cornuché, Director of the Trouville Casino, starts constructing a new temple to gambling in Deauville. He thinks of everything and also has a hotel built to accommodate visitors: Le Normandy. The opening of the casino in the summer of 1912 attracts 1,500 guests. It is an immediate success. Deauville is popular and inspiring, becoming a model resort.

François André

the Group’s founder, takes over the Société des Hôtels et Casino de Deauville.

He succeeds Eugène Cornuché at the head of the Société des Hôtels et Casino de Deauville (SHCD).

Opening of

L'Hôtel du Golf

François André creates luxury resorts for his clientele, where gambling competes with sport, entertainment and relaxation. He starts constructing the L'Hôtel du Golf in Deauville, followed by the adjacent golf club in 1929, with the architect Tom Simpson.

Lucien Barrière

takes the helm at the Group

Lucien Barrière, who joined the family business in 1951, succeeds his uncle François André. He modernises the Group, being careful to maintain tradition and preserve the prestigious seaside resorts bequeathed by his uncle.

1975

The first Deauville

American Film Festival

Lucien Barrière welcomes leading high society figures to Deauville, including the legendary couple Brigitte Bardot and Gunther Sachs. By contributing to the birth of the festival, he links the Group closely to the art of cinema.

1980

Founding of the

Société Hôtelière de la Chaîne Lucien Barrière

To bring together all the establishments he owns, Lucien Barrière founds the Société Hôtelière de la Chaîne Lucien Barrière (SHCLB), bringing together the hotels and the La Baule casino.

1988

Arrival of the

first slot machines

in France

The first slot machines are installed in the Casino Barrière Deauville and Cannes among others. Lucien Barrière dies in September 1990 before he can experience the public's enthusiasm for these machines.

Diane Barrière

succeeds her father

After the death of Lucien Barrière, Diane initiates major renovation projects at the Groups legendary hotels and begins a long collaboration with the decorator Jacques Garcia. In doing so, she instils the family business with its inimitable “Barrière” style.
In 1995, she is seriously injured in a plane crash.

continues the family’s work

After the death of his wife in 2001, he focuses on the Groups innovation over the long-term, by diversifying and anticipating new trends, as well as making their first development on an international scale.

Opening of the first casino outside of France, in Montreux in Switzerland. In 2008, it becomes the leading Swiss casino in terms of gross gambling revenue.
